Michael Jackson's Casket Made in Indiana

Monday, July 13, 2009 by Roger Bridges
An Indiana company was center stage at pop superstar Michael Jackson's funeral last week with a product no one could miss: a gleaming golden casket, shined to a mirror finish. Batesville Casket, the world's largest maker of caskets, provided the luxurious Promethean model, which traditionally comes with a deep-blue velvet interior.

But like a low-key funeral provider that prefers to remain behind the scenes, the company modestly confirmed the news without actually doing so. "We never discuss any particular business transaction, but based on the images we saw on television, it appears to be a Promethean," said Teresa Gyulafia, a Batesville spokeswoman.

She declined to reveal whether the casket had unique, custom-built features or to disclose the price. Various funeral homes list the Promethean at $25,000 to $30,000 on their websites.

Batesville is comfortable with high-profile funerals. It provided caskets for Presidents Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, John Kennedy and Harry Truman. Celebrities buried in Batesville caskets have included Bob Hope, Wilt Chamberlain, Farrah Fawcett and Fred Astaire. Three years ago, the company provided a Promethean casket, similar to the one Jackson was buried in, for soul singer James Brown.

Batesville Casket is one of the largest companies in the small town of Batesville, Ind., about 70 miles southeast of Indianapolis.

Don't settle for a casket made in China.  At Indiana Funeral Care, we use Indiana made, low cost caskets.  We offer complete funerals for less than $5,000.  Call us at (317) 636-6464 for more information on pre planned funerals.

A Soldier Died Today

Friday, May 22, 2009 by Roger Bridges

A Soldier Died Today

by R.F. Dees and his grandson, Justin Pierce in honor of Memorial Day
and veterans who have fought in wars and conflicts.

He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was falling fast;
And he sat around the Legion, telling stories of the past.
Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies, they were heroes everyone.
And tho' sometimes to his neighbors, his tales became a joke,
All his legion buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke.
But we'll hear his tales no longer, for old John has passed away;
And the world's a little poorer, for a soldier died today.
He'll not be mourned by many, just his children and his wife,
For he lived an ordinary and quite uneventful life.
Held a job and raised a family, quietly going his own way,
And the world won't note his passing, though a soldier died today.
When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in state,
And thousands note their passing and proclaim that they were great.
Newspapers tell their life stories, from the time that they were young.
But, the passing of a simple Soldier goes unnoticed and unsung.
Is the greatest contribution to the welfare of our land,
A person who breaks promises and cons his fellow man,
Or the ordinary fellow, who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his Country and offers his life?
It"s so easy to forget them, for it was so long ago,
That the "old Johns" of our country went to battle, but we know,
It was not the politicians, with their promises and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom that our Country now enjoys.
He was just a "common soldier" and his ranks are growing thin.
But, his presence should remind us, we may need his like again.
For when countries are in conflict, then we find the Soldier's part,
Is to clean up the troubles, that others often start.
If we cannot give him honor, while he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least, let's give him homage at the ending of his days.
Perhaps a simple notice, in the paper that would say,
"Our country is in mourning, cause a Soldier passed away today."

Famous Funerals: Elvis Aaron Presley

Tuesday, May 5, 2009 by Roger Bridges

Who doesn't know about the life of "The King of Rock 'n Roll?"  Elvis Aaron Presley was one of the first rockabilly performers, and his stage performances often caused an uproar in the 1950s and 1960s.  He is known for hits such as Hound Dog, Blue Suede Shoes and Jailhouse Rock, among others.  His final concert was held at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 26, 1977.  My sister was inattendance that night.   Presley died from a drug overdose on August 16, 1977 at the age of 42.

Elvis Aaron Presley

Compared to some famous funerals, Elvis Presley's was a modest affair. After he was embalmed at the Memphis (Tennessee) Funeral Home, his body was returned to his home, Graceland, for public viewing. More than 30,000 fans converged to bid farewell to this cultural icon. Then-President Jimmy Carter ordered roughly 300 U.S. National Guard troops to maintain peace at the event, and all of the flags in Memphis were flown at half-staff.

His funeral was held two days after he died in the living room at Graceland. Televangelist Rex Humbard delivered the sermon and many of Elvis' colleagues spoke (and sang) on his behalf including Jackie Kahane, J.D. Sumner and the Stamps, the Statesmen and Kathy Westmoreland. Others in attendance included Caroline Kennedy (daughter of the late-President John F. Kennedy), Sammy Davis Jr. and James Brown.

Following the service at Graceland, the funeral procession, which consisted of 14 white Cadillacs, proceeded through the fan-lined streets of Memphis to Forest Hill Cemetery where he was interned. Presley's body was later moved back to Graceland and buried in its Meditation Garden after someone tried to steal his remains.

Unusual Final Resting Place

Thursday, April 30, 2009 by Roger Bridges

I read this morning about a cemetery in Chicago that has built a red brick wall resembling the wall in center field at Wrigley Field.  This wall will accommodate 288 cremated remains.

"Fans of the team that hasn't won the World Series in 101 years now have a place where they can wait an eternity for a title, if necessary.

A red brick wall designed to resemble the one in dead centre at Wrigley Field has been erected in a Chicago cemetery and is ready to accept the cremated remains of Cubs fans - inside an $800 Cubbie blue and white urn if they wish.

Dedicated a few days ago, the wall with its stained-glass scoreboard has what Fans Forever president Dennis Mascari likes to call "skyboxes" to accommodate 288 "season-ticket holders."

Deciding on the final resting place of your cremated remains is just one of many questions that must be answered at the time of your death.  Pre-planning your funeral is a loving way to relieve your family from this emotional and financial burden.  Call Indiana Funeral Care at 1-866-570-0029 to learn how you can pre-plan your simple cremation for $890 or a memorial service with cremation to follow for just $1,795.

A Quiet Heart

Monday, April 27, 2009 by Roger Bridges

Some say Li Ching-Yun died at the ripe old age of 256.  Others put it more conservatively at 199.  His secret to a long life was:
  • Keep a quiet heart
  • Sit like a tortoise
  • Walk sprightly like a pigeon
  • Sleep like a dog
He could have saved his family a lot of pain and anguish by having his final wishes documented and paid for.  Call Indiana Funeral Care today for information on our $890 direct cremation or our $3,950 complete church funeral service.  Our toll-free number is 1-866-570-0029.

Hong Kong Cremations

Thursday, April 23, 2009 by Roger Bridges

In Hong Kong, it can be hard just finding somewhere to sit down. In the fourth most densely populated place in the world, park benches are packed and strangers share tables at restaurants. But for the 40,000 people who die there every year, it turns out there's no respite from the crowds, even in the afterlife. While a land shortage forced Hong Kongers to give up on burials long ago — only 11% of bodies were buried in 2007 — the city has also run out of space for cremated ashes.

On April 14, the government began accepting applications for new cremation niches at its Diamond Hill columbarium, a massive nine-story building that stores cremation urns. The 18,500 new niches, the largest new public supply in almost a decade, compelled nearly 1,000 people to line up outside the columbarium office to personally submit their applications on opening day.

Make It Special

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 by Roger Bridges

Here are a few unique things people have planned for their funerals:

Bike lovers pay an extra $200 or so to take their last ride in a special hearse towed by a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Gardeners select wildflower seed packets to include with their funeral programs. One gentleman wanted to be remembered for comforting his grandchildren with ice cream, so, after the funeral, mourners were greeted by a man in a Good Humor truck, handing out frozen treats.

Indiana Funeral Care can help you plan and pay for your funeral so that you get the celebration of life you desire and your family doesn't have to worry and wonder what you would have wanted.  We offer low cost caskets, discounted funeral and creamtion services and most of all, peace of mind.

Abraham Lincoln's Casket on Display

Wednesday, April 15, 2009 by Roger Bridges
A replica of the ornate casket of Abraham Lincoln was displayed at the Spencer County Courthouse on Tuesday, April 15, 144 years after Lincoln was mortally wounded at Ford's Theater.  He died the morning after the shooting.

Replica of Lincoln's Casket

Lincoln's funeral train carried his body from Washington to Springfield, Ill., creating a traveling spectacle that allowed an estimated one million people to view his open casket.

Each major stop from April 21 to May 4, 1865, involved large funeral processions.  In Indianapolis, state historians say at least 50,000 Hoosiers filed past Lincoln's coffin, which was placed on display at the predecessor to Indiana's current Statehouse.   Streets were lit by bonfires and torches as the casket was returned to Union Depot at midnight and loaded back onto the funeral train.

By planning your funeral in advance with Indiana Funeral Care, you can make your celebration of life as memorable as Lincoln's but at a fraction of the cost of typical funeral homes.  Call us today at 1-866-570-0029 to find out about our complete church funeral services starting at $3,950 and our simple yet dignified cremation packages starting at just $890.

Greek playwright Aeschylus wrote, "And even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God."  Beautiful and comforting words for someone experiencing the death of a loved one.
